Mountain weather is constantly changing. Bluebird mornings turn into afternoon storms and vice versa. Clouds roll in and light will go flat. The last thing you should be thinking about is whether you have the right lens.
When developing DSCND goggles, we tested photochromic lens technology along with traditional lenses from a variety of brands. Photochromic lenses offer the convenience of one lens that adjusts as light conditions change, but we didn't feel the technology gave us the performance we wanted at both ends of the spectrum. We wanted a truly dark lens for bright, bluebird days and a dedicated low-light lens for low visibilty storm riding we regularly experience in Tahoe.
So instead of going the do everything photochromic route, every DSCND goggle comes with two purpose-built magnetic lenses. One for low light and one for bright sun. Our Magnetic Lens System lets you switch between them in literal seconds.
Our system uses 11 strategically placed magnets around the frame to securely lock the lens into position while making it easy to remove and replace. No complicated clips, locks, or wrestling with the frame. Just pop off, swap and keep moving.
Two Lenses. One Goggle. More Conditions.
Every DSCND goggle includes two lenses designed to cover the conditions we encounter most in the mountains. We tested a wide range of lens styles and felt these two can do it all.
Rose Low-Light Lens — 51% VLT
Our Rose lens features 51% VLT (Visible Light Transmission) was selected and tested for the flat-light and storm conditions we see in the Sierra, those inch-a-hour type storms.
When clouds settle in and the snow definition starts to disappear, a higher-VLT lens allows more available light to reach your eyes. The Rose tint helps improve visibility and brighten terrain definition when you're skiing or riding.
Dark Smoke Lens — 6% VLT
When the storm clears and it goes blue, swap to the Dark Smoke lens with 6% VLT.
The significantly lower VLT reduces the amount of visible light passing through the lens, making it our choice for bright, sunny days and alpine conditions where reflected light off the snow can be intense.
Together, the 51% Rose and 6% Dark Smoke lenses give you a wide range of coverage without needing to buy an additional lens before heading to the mountain.
How to Swap Your DSCND Lens
Changing lenses takes only a few seconds and can be done without tools.
Step 1: Hold the goggle securely.
Grip the frame with one hand while holding the outer edge of the lens with the other.
Step 2: Pull the lens away from the frame.
Gently pull outward from the edge of the lens. The magnetic connection will release, allowing the lens to separate from the goggle. Its easiest if you contour and bend the frame slightly.
Step 3: Grab the lens you need.
Choose the Rose 51% VLT lens for storm days or the Dark Smoke 6% VLT lens for bright conditions.
Step 4: Align the new lens with the frame.
Bring the replacement lens toward the goggle frame. The magnetic mounting points will naturally help guide the lens into the correct position.
Step 5: Check the connection.
Run your fingers around the perimeter of the lens and make sure it is fully seated and securely attached before putting the goggles back on.
Built for Changing Conditions
The goal behind the DSCND Magnetic Lens System is simple: we'd rather give you two lenses designed to excel in their intended conditions than ask one lens to compromise between both.
Keep your second lens in your pack, jacket or goggle case and change your setup as conditions evolve throughout the day. This is especially clutch for backcountry skiing, when your out for 6-8+ hours at a time.
Two lenses. One magnetic system. Swap in seconds.
