SKI & SNOWBOARD GOGGLE LENS GUIDE
THE RIGHT LENSES FOR THE CONDITIONS
Light in the mountains is constantly changing. A bluebird morning can turn into flat light by the afternoon, and a stormy morning can break into full bluebird in the afternoon, especially here in California.
Choosing the right goggle lens can make a huge difference in how clearly you see terrain, changes in snow, and what's ahead of you. Every DSCND goggle comes with two purpose-built magnetic lenses—one for low-light conditions and one for bright days.
Here's how to choose the right lens for the conditions.
WHAT DOES VLT MEAN?
VLT stands for Visible Light Transmission and measures the percentage of visible light that passes through your goggle lens.
The basic rule is simple:
Higher VLT = more light passes through the lens.
Best for cloudy, stormy, and low-light conditions.
Lower VLT = less light passes through the lens.
Best for bright and sunny conditions.
There isn't one VLT that's perfect for every day in the mountains, which is why DSCND goggles include two lenses designed for opposite ends of the light spectrum.
LOW LIGHT, STORMS & FLAT LIGHT
CLEAR LENS — 82% VLT
The Clear Lens is as simple as it gets. For the 'free refills' days, and night skiing.
With 83% VLT, the clear lens is for:
-
Snowstorms and blizzards
-
Night Skiing
ROSE LENS — 51% VLT
Our Rose lens is designed for days when you need more light reaching your eyes.
With 51% VLT, it's our go-to lens for:
-
Snowstorms
-
Overcast skies
-
Flat light
-
Heavy cloud cover
-
Storm is moving in and reduced visibility
We spent a lot of time developing and testing our low-light lens in Tahoe, where storm riding is a regular part of the routine.
When the light disappears, reach for the Rose Lens.
BRIGHT & SUNNY CONDITIONS
DARK SMOKE LENS — 6% VLT
Our Dark Smoke lens sits at the other end of the spectrum.
With 6% VLT, significantly less visible light passes through the lens, making it our choice for:
-
Bluebird days
-
Bright sunshine
-
High-alpine terrain
-
Clear days with intense mountain light
When the suns out, use the Dark Smoke.
WHY NOT JUST USE ONE LENS?
As we were developing DSCND, we tested photochromic goggles from other brands. We liked the concept of a lens that automatically adjusts as conditions change, but we didn't feel one lens delivered the performance we wanted at both extremes.
We wanted a true low-light lens for storm days and a true dark lens for bright days.
So instead of asking one lens to do everything, we give you both.
Every DSCND goggle includes a 51% VLT Rose lens and a 6% VLT Dark Smoke lens. The Clear Lens can be purchased separately.
CONDITIONS CHANGE. YOUR LENS CAN TOO.
Having two lenses only works if changing them is easy.
We built our Magnetic Lens System to let you switch lenses in seconds as weather and visibility change. Remove one lens, align the other with the frame, and let the magnetic system guide it securely into position.
No heading back to the lodge. No complicated lens change. Just grab the lens that works for the conditions and keep moving.
DEVELOPED IN TAHOE. TESTED AROUND THE WORLD.
We developed our lenses at home in Tahoe and took them with us into different mountain environments around the world before putting the DSCND name on 'em.
We wanted something simple and intuitive. So, we are giving you two lenses you need, and include both with every goggle.
51% VLT for the storm. 6% VLT for the sunshine.
